John Hagan: Partner

John Hagan is a trial lawyer Board Certified in Labor & Employment Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization and focuses primarily on employment law in the Firm’s Dallas office. He advises and defends corporate employers, both large and small, on employment disputes, including clients who have nonsubscribed to the Texas Workers’ Compensation Act and those with unionized employees. He also advises and defends corporate clients on commercial and insurance litigation issues.

Mr. Hagan also helps employers avoid and, if possible, resolve employment disputes before they ever reach litigation. He advises clients on a wide variety of employment issues arising under both state and federal law, including issues arising under applicable collective bargaining agreements. He will review company policies, procedures and handbooks for compliance with the law, and will suggest and implement appropriate revisions. Having enforced numerous arbitration agreements, he can also advise clients whether an arbitration policy would be appropriate for their business.

In the event litigation does arise, however, Mr. Hagan has considerable experience in both court and arbitration successfully defending employment claims. He has handled claims for discrimination, retaliation, wrongful discharge and sexual harassment under a variety of state and federal employment laws. Mr. Hagan has also successfully tried employment cases in court and arbitration, including nonsubscriber and commercial cases.

Mr. Hagan grew up in Texas and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, in 1981 from the University of Texas at Austin. He obtained his law degree in 1997 from Southern Methodist University School of Law, where he was Editor-In-Chief of the Computer Law Review and Technology Journal and contributed “What Every Texas Attorney Needs to Know About the Ethics of Advertising on the Internet” to that publication. Mr. Hagan served as President of the Collin County Young Lawyers Association for the term 1998 to 1999. Mr. Hagan has been with Sarles & Ouimet, L.L.P. in its Dallas office since 2007.

Mr. Hagan is an award-winning author for the College of the State Bar, and had co-authored Texas Employment Law for James Publishing and the Employment Law Handbook – Texas for the Texas Association of Business. In 2004, Mr. Hagan was awarded a Presidential Citation from the State Bar of Texas. In 2001, he received the President’s Award of Merit from the TYLA. In 2000, he was chosen outstanding TYLA Director of the Year. That same year, the Collin County Young Lawyers Association created an award in his honor, the John P. Hagan Founders’ Award, to recognize future young bar leaders for their commitment to public service.

Mr. Hagan has been admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Western and Southern Districts of Texas, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeal and admitted to practice pro hac vice in the State of Oklahoma. He is a member of the labor and employment law sections of the Texas Bar Association and the Dallas Bar Association. Mr. Hagan is not licensed in Illinois.
